Gratitude and Attitude

I’m a pretty sensitive person; not that a lot of people would know exactly. In social situations -of any kind- I get overwhelmed really quickly. Naturally, I’m pretty talkative, so I’m don’t get all wallflower-ish, but I do start to get stressed out. After any social event, I’m thrilled to get home and curl up on couch and “process.” I don’t know what it is about me that make me this way. . .I just know that I get overstimulated super easy. I worked at a camp that was DEEP in the woods one time, and it used the same neutral color scheme EVERYWHERE in the camp (I guess to be more nature-friendly). After being there for a week, I drove about an hour into town and was head-turning at all the bright colors on store signs. . .You know, stuff we see every day. And, it was just exhuasting. That is what socializing is like for me.

And, uh, I’m a teacher. With kids all day long. So, sometimes the stuff that my co-workers take in stride really can be exhausting for me. I have to work extra-hard to be calm and collected for my students (and I am). So, when I leave work, I don’t want to run errands, be on the phone or with friends. I want to be home, alone, with my dog and in my jammies.

As such, I’m so stressed from the simplest things and since I wait til home to deal with it I often forget just how awesomely magical my job is. I’m knee deep in art (which is the 2nd love of my life with my dog being my 1st). For instance today I’ve worked on paper portrait collages with high schoolers, introduced 2nd graders to Dali and surrealism, and taught 7th graders the facial proportions according to Pliny. Later this afternoon, I teach some mixed middle schooler some made Photoshop skills, teach 5th graders how to make their own scratchboards, and build pipe cleaner skeletons for papier mache animals with 6th graders.

Tonight I get to hang out with the coolest cohort in the history of cohorts and check out their sure-to-be stellar mandalas.

That is a rockstar day. And, I’m grateful.

Philosophy Reflections

Deconstructivism. I’m not a fan. But, maybe because I’m not a fan of analyzing anything to THAT degree (and I’m the analytical sort).

Derrida writes/talks/pontificates about self/observation of self and truth a lot from my limited knowledge of him. As in, what is a representation of our true selves? Are we/how are we different with others etc.

I was pretty socially awkward for a long time; still am. At this point in my life, I’ve found the only way to deal with that is just be as authentically myself as I can be within the realms of not causing immediate harm to myself (psychological or otherwise). So, I say what I what, when I please for the most part.

For example, I didn’t unleash my true feelings on the video we watched tonight because it really isn’t in my best interest to have my professor find me difficult (any more than she already does).

So, do I get it? Yeah. You might say I was not authentic tonight. But, you could also say that I was authentic; because I acted in the way that felt true for that situation. See. Way too much rubber, kookified nonsense.

Film Lecture Reflections

This past week my class was fortunate to have a visiting drama professor come and discuss some of the finer points of the art of film.

I wouldn’t say I have a strong background in film, but I do love technology. And, as such, have a fair amount of experiencing in creating “moving pictures.” I appreciated the concept of the film in the classroom, and especially the attention that was given to the editing aspect. And, while I am familiar with flash media and as such imovie, the review wasn’t harmful. Truly, it is important for students to understand the connection between what they shoot and how they present material.

In my experience, students are extremely linear. They often want to shoot items in order, and display exactly what they shoot. Taking the time to shoot in a way that is time conservative and uses different vantage points takes more pre-planning than the average student wants to volunteer. Additionally, taking shot material and then cutting and splicing it to better effect shows a sophistication that most students are gradually acquiring. All of this leads me to believe that when creating a film project it is important for the teacher to structure time.

For example, my students are constructing a claymation series. And this is the break down of assignments for them. For each assignment the student must receive teacher approval to move forward:

1. theme based on 2 continuous lines of Shakespeare

2. develop of a story idea

3. development of characters

4. story-boarding

6. set design

7. shot layouts and boarding

8. photography

9. importing into computer

10. cleaning up images

11. editing and ordering

12. timing

13. researching music

14. adding music

15. re-editing

16. publishing

Film projects can take a loooong time and I think it is important when doing a film project to consider what the different objectives can be. It is important to incorporate as many disciplines as possible when doing a project that may take up to a month or longer to complete.
